New Media and Social Movements (YMGA472)
This course aims to investigate the power and effects of the networked digital media such as the Internet and mobile communication in the mass media driven mobilization and the growing relationship between social movement and social media. It will conceptualize the public sphere, mediapolis, and new media which are changing the communication in global activism. It also brings theoretical discussions about the formation of social movements such as “opportunity structures”, “mobilizing structures” and the rise, fall, and rise of social movements. In the content of the course there will be a focus on case studies in which new media usage was extremely high.
