Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Cyprus Policy Center (CPC), Political Science and International Relations Department and Business Administration Department co-organized a panel titled “Milliyetçilik ve Kültür / Nationalism and Culture”.
The opening speech of the said panel was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, the Chair of both EMU Department of Political Science and International Relations and CPC. Prof. Dr. Sözen stressed the significance of the event and introduced the panellist to the participants of the event. During the panel, Prof. Dr. Ali Dayıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü, EMU Business Administration Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Erkurt and EMU Political Science and International Relations Department Assistant Head Assist. Prof. Dr. Gülay Umaner Duba delivered presentations.
Focused on the Topics of Nationalism and Culture
During the event, Prof. Dr. Ali Dayıoğlu began by discussing the influence of shared nationalism in Cyprus on the minorities in Greece and Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Nur Köprülü then focused on the need to reassess Arabism, highlighting the ongoing effects of the Arab uprisings and the Gaza War. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülay Umaner Duba, the Assistant Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, spoke about how nationalism is managed in multinational states, advocating for unity in diversity. The final speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Erkut, Head of the Business Department, compared the cultural views of Ziya Gökalp and Wiebke Sievers, noting that Gökalp considered culture static, while Sievers viewed it as ever-evolving.
During the highly participated and interacted panel event, speakers answered the questions of the attendees. Presentations delivered on nationalism and culture, moderated by EMU CPC Chair Prof. Dr. Ahjmet Sözen, extensively addressed the relevant issues.
