Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Tourism, Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts students organized a meaningful event for the students of Rauf Raif Denktaş School for the Visually Impaired. Led by the Chair of EMU Community Involvement Center (CIC) and EMU Faculty of Tourism academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazenin Ruso Kandemir, the event which included a pizza making workshop and a guitar recital hosted visually-impaired children.
Fun and Educational Workshop
As part of the event, a pizza workshop was held led by the chef candidates who receive training at the Department of Gastronomy. The fun and educational workshop was also accompanied by a guitar recital. Batuhan Kibritçi, a guitarist from the EMU Music Club, performed a mini concert for the children in the music room. The event also featured a fun activity where different musical instruments were introduced. EMU students involved in the project stated that the event helped them gain important experience in communicating more effectively with visually impaired children.
“A Significant Experience in terms of Humanitarian Values”
Assist. Prof. Dr. Kandemir mentioned that the event offered EMU students a valuable experience, not just professionally but also in terms of human values. Prof. Dr. Kandemir emphasized that the project aimed to foster the creative abilities of the children. Additionally, Kandemir thanked Ülkü Şah, the coordinator of Rauf Raif Denktaş School for the Visually Impaired, for the ongoing collaboration.
Following the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mine Haktanır, the Acting Dean of the EMU Faculty of Tourism, noted that their faculty prioritizes not only academic achievement but also the development of students’ social responsibility. She stressed that they have always supported such initiatives and will continue to do so in the future.
