Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture academic staff membe Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacer Başarır Dindiç and PhD student Tochukwu Nnaji carried out a presentation and a workshop titled “Climate Change and Society: Preservation of Famagusta’s Cultural Heritage Assests” hosted by Mağusa Suriçi Derneği (MASDER). The presentation addressed the relationship between climate change and the preservation of cultural heritage, with the goal of fostering cooperation to safeguard cultural heritage sites from the growing climate risks.

Famagusta boasts a rich cultural heritage, featuring historical artifacts from various civilizations. However, this heritage is threatened by the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation. The event aimed to increase local awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage and encourage community involvement in safeguarding it.
Interactive Sessions Held
The workshop provided participants with practical tools to help them better understand the connection between climate change and cultural heritage. It included interactive sessions on climate vulnerability assessments, preservation of cultural heritage, and the development of strategies.
With the expertise and communication network of MASDER, the workshop aimed to merge scientific knowledge with the practical experience of the local community to create viable solutions for cultural heritage preservation. Participants explored climate change risks and protective measures with a shared sense of responsibility.
The presentation encouraged the creation of innovative solutions tailored to Famagusta’s unique situation, using examples from global cultural heritage sites. The workshop played a key role in aligning broader socio-economic goals with MASDER's commitment to cultural protection and sustainable tourism.
