On 4 February World Cancer Day, Eastern Mediterranean University Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora highlighted the cancer reality by stating that one in every three women and one in every two men will get cancer a some point in their lives according to statisitical data. Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora also added that it is envisaged that 15% of the world population will lose their lives due to cancer. In this respect, Prof. Dr. Gökçora put forth that cancer is an issue with a difficult treatment process which has to be supported with appropriate means.
Prof. Dr. Gökçora added that being an issue beyond patients, families, communities and even countries, cancer is a universal problem requiring collaboration and cooperation. Prof. Dr. Gökçora, added that EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty has the target of establishing a sustainable, modern and scientific cancer recording system which corresponds with world standards. In this respect, Prof. Dr. Gökçora stated that their faculty is actively involved in a project entitled “Cancer Recording and Cancer Screening in the TRNC”. The said project is carried out in collaboration with TRNC Ministry of Health and TR Embassy to Nicosia.
Prof. Dr. Gökçora stated that within the framework of the project, Turkish Republic Cancer Department and International Cancer Research Agency provided training on the operation of the cancer software entitled CanReg and phasing of cancer cases. In the near future, relevant substructure for cancer recording will be made available.
Prof. Dr. Gökçora finally put forth that EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty will be organising a ceremony honoring the civil community activists who have taken active roles in the formation of cancer awareness within the community on 29 February 2016. On the same date, the faculty will be hosting a panel entitled “The Current Situation of the Fight Against Cancer within the TRNC”.
