Psychology (Turkish) Undergraduate Program (B.S., 4 Years)

As one of the principal fields of behavioral sciences, psychology involves the study of human behavior from various perspectives. Personal development, socialisation, interpersonal relationships, human resources, principles of learning and behavioral disorders are some of the basics of psychology. Despite the fact that the Psychology Department is one of the youngest departments of the University, it is recognized as one of the top departments both in the TRNC and within Turkey in the area of psychology education, thanks to its elite academic staff and its quality in research and application.

General Information

With an elite group of teaching staff with PhD degrees obtained from distinguished universities of the world and the international student population, EMU Psychology Department boasts an international academic environment which enables an enriched scientific and social information exchange between students and faculty members. Attaching great importance to students' self-development both personally and socially, Department of Psychology supports Psychology students with projects and presentations prepared as course requirements, as well as forums and discussion groups prepared and presented by the students themselves and through the EMU Psychology Days organized every year. Psychology students can also participate in research projects of faculty members and gain knowledge in the application areas of Psychology.

Education

The Department of Psychology Undergraduate Program aims to provide students with fundamental psychology training necessary for them to pursue their postgraduate studies in various sub-fields of Psychology such as Social, Cognitive, Industrial-Organization, Forensic, Education, Health, Clinical, Development, and Traffic. The educational objectives of Turkish and English undergraduate programs are as follows:

  1. To provide basic and up-to-date information about various sub-branches of psychology.
  2. To obtain and interpret reliable information produced by psychological science.
  3. To ensure that students first learn and then internalize the research and applied ethics of Psychology.
  4. To ensure that students learn practically how scientific research is carried out by taking part in the research groups of the department.
  5. To ensure that students understand the concept of diversity through scientific methods.
  6. To contribute to students becoming individuals who do not directly accept all kinds of information presented and have a questioning and critical perspective.
  7. To ensure that students become researchers who can read the literature and scientific research with a critical eye, independently create research questions, and contribute to the advancement of the science of Psychology by examining these questions with correct and ethical scientific methods.

In parallel with these objectives, undergraduate program learning outcomes are listed as follows;

  1. Students are familiar with different theoretical approaches of psychology.
  2. Students have basic application knowledge and skills.
  3. Students have basic knowledge of testing and measurement methods and tools in psychology.
  4. Students have the ability to work independently, take responsibility and initiative.
  5. Students can continue and conclude a research from the data collection stage to the reporting stage.
  6. Students have internalized the concept of diversity in psychology.
  7. Students have a good command of the research and applied ethics of psychological science.
  8. Students know the interaction between fields such as Epistemology, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology and Psychology.
  9. Students can use current information and communication technologies within ethical limits to access and disseminate information.
  10. Students have the ability to take part effectively in scientific activities and social responsibility projects.
  11. Students can read and discuss scientific studies from a critical perspective and create research questions using scientific methods to develop new research projects.

The curriculum of the program is based on the well-established EuroPsy (the European Qualification Standard for Psychologists) and the Turkish Psychological Association criteria implemented in the department’s accreditation process. In this context, the decisions taken by the external stakeholders, namely the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations (EFPA) and the Turkish Psychological Association (TPD), are taken into account in shaping the course curriculum.

Facilities

The existing computer and audio-visual technological possibilities at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences are at the Psychology students’ disposal. In addition, the University Library offers databases which enable students to follow the latest developments in the discipline of Psychology.

In addition to the Behavioral Sciences Laboratory, the first Psychology laboratory in TRNC universities, EMU Psychology Department also boasts Clinical and Lifelong Development Laboratory, Memory and Action Research Laboratory, and Social and Traffic Psychology Laboratory. The Department also provides a rich social environment for its students. Hence, the EMU Psychology Students Club regularly organises informative meetings, scientific trips, movie screenings, and reading-discussion groups as well as other activities with the Turkish Psychology Students Working Group and EMU Psychology Days.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program may continue their academic studies at Master’s or Doctoral Degree level at the Eastern Mediterranean University, or the leading universities in Turkey, Europe or North America. Graduates of the Psychology Department’s English or Turkish-medium programs have the opportunity to work in educational institutions, industry, human resources departments, counseling centers and other private or public sectors that provide psychology services.
